Single-car crash kills one person in downtown Kansas City Tuesday
One person died after a single-car crash in downtown Kansas City Tuesday, police said.
Officers responded around 12:49 a.m. to a reported crash near Interstate 670 and U.S. 71 Highway, according to a Kansas City Police Department crash log.
A preliminary investigation indicates that a gray BMW coupe sped on the exit ramp from I-670 to southbound Highway 71. The BMW failed to turn at a curve in the ramp and ran off the road to the left, according to police.
The BMW then traveled down a grassy embankment and struck a concrete bridge support pillar before it came to rest, according to police.
Paramedics pronounced the driver, who was the only occupant of the BMW, dead at the scene.
The fatal crash is Kansas City’s 63rd traffic death this year, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a KCPD spokeswoman. At this time last year, the city had recorded 89 traffic deaths.
