A second person has died after a car flipped over a guardrail into Brush Creek early Sunday morning near the Plaza.

Emergency personnel responded to the area of west Bush Creek and north Ward Parkway at approximately 2:20 a.m. Sunday on reports of an injury crash, according to a prior press release from officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed a white four-door sedan was traveling west on Ward Parkway at “a high rate of speed,” Gonzalez said. The sedan “failed to negotiate” a curve, and it careened over the guardrail.

The sedan came to rest upside down in Brush Creek, Gonzalez said. Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead later that day, Gonzalez said.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead Thursday, Gonzalez said in a Friday press release.

The driver’s death marks Kansas City’s 61st traffic fatality in 2025, compared to 86 traffic fatalities at this time last year.
