A Kansas City Streetcar was damaged in a crash near its University of Missouri — Kansas City stop Saturday morning, a KC Street Car Authority spokesperson said.

The crash happened around 11:20 a.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Brookside Boulevard.

A box truck drove north on Brookside Boulevard when it swerved around a vehicle, said Donna Mandelbaum, a spokesperson with the KC Streetcar Authority, in an email. The truck then allegedly made a right turn at a red light on MLK Jr. Boulevard and collided with the streetcar, Mandelbaum said.

According to witnesses at the scene, it appeared that the box truck “blew past a red light” before the collision.

Investigative details from law enforcement about what led to the crash have not yet been made available.

A spokesperson from the Kansas City Police Department said in an email that officers were called around 11:20 a.m. by a Ride KC Supervisor.

The crash involved an SUV, a truck and the Ride KC Streetcar, said Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. Circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation, Becchina said.

Paramedics responded to the scene with police and treated the streetcar driver for minor injuries, Becchina said.

Officers are working on an injury incident report and a citation was issued to one of the drivers involved in the crash, Becchina said.

The front bumper of the streetcar was knocked off in the wreck. Glass on the front windshield and right side of the streetcar shattered.

Photos taken at the scene of the crash show the rear door of the box truck was also damaged.

Passengers were instructed to wait until the supervisor arrived to exit the streetcar.

Streetcar services were halted while crews worked to clear the scene. Services resumed once the streetcar was removed from the line, Mandelbaum said.
