KC man dies after being ejected in Grandview crash; investigation continues

A driver died over the weekend after being ejected from his car during a crash Friday on Interstate 49 in Grandview, a police spokesman said.

The driver killed in the crash was identified as 34-year-old Sean Fields of Kansas City, said Capt. Ryan Sharp with the Grandview Police Department.

Grandview police and fire departments responded to the crash at about 11:15 a.m. Friday on northbound I-49 at the entrance ramp from Main Street.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Fields was headed north in a white Lexus on I-49 at high speeds when he came upon slower traffic, causing him to suddenly change lanes, Sharp said in a news release. Fields then struck an SUV, causing the SUV to go off the roadway, where it overturned.

Fields, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from his vehicle. The Grandview Fire Department took Fields to a hospital, where he later died.

The East Frontage Road ramp from Main Street to northbound I-49, as well as at least two northbound lanes of the highway, were closed while police investigated the crash.

The Grandview Police Department’s major crash team continues to investigate the events leading up to the crash.
