Massive Mexican sports bar opens in Kansas City: ‘Leading the path’
There are plenty of sports bars in Kansas City and beyond to choose from.
Alejandra Aguirre and her husband Raul Aguirre, along with her brother Alex Flores, have been to several chain pubs to watch games — all fine establishments. But Mexican sports bars specifically? That’s harder to come by. Plus, many of the garden-variety bars don’t play boxing matches often enough for their liking.
So the trio created a concept all their own. Mexican sports bar Dos Lokos opened last weekend at 401 Westport Road, formerly home to Fountain Haus.
“We knew there was a need for it, so we’re like, ‘Why not start the idea?’” Alejandra said.
The 13,000-square-foot space has three bars in total: one in the main room decorated with punching bags and popular fighters, another farther back with basketball nets and NBA players’ jerseys, and a soccer-themed rooftop bar with a turf-covered patio.
On the rooftop, garage-style doors open to link the outdoor and indoor portions.
In the building’s basement, the business partners and family members are planning a speakeasy-style concept. They say that won’t be ready until next year — no spoilers on what the theme will be, but Alejandra said she’s especially excited about that.
For now, TVs line the walls of each of the respective bar areas, promising to broadcast a variety of sports. A mural with a variety of logos sits beside the main bar. The Monarchs, Chiefs, KC Current, Mavericks, Royals and Sporting KC are represented.
Dos Lokos (“loko” is a stylistic spelling of the Spanish word “loco” or “crazy”) offers a Mexican-American menu of tacos, wings, fajitas, birria ramen, burgers and more.
Alejandra called the menu “just a little bit of everything.”
The bar offers a variety of Mexican cocktails. Margarita flavors include strawberry, mango, peach or spicy jalapeño. The Cantarito Loko offers a variety of drinks in a pitcher, with cantaritos (traditional Mexican jugs) for four to six people. Other drinks include the Juarez Mule, Paloma Blanca, a gummy bear shot and more.
Alejandra added that the bar is a “good mix” of Mexican and non-Mexican patrons. Some rooms play country music, others play Mexican hits, and others still play R&B. She hopes the space attracts Kansas Citians from all walks of life.
With a weekend of Dos Lokos already under her belt, Alejandra said she’s excited about the future of her business.
Plus, as a first-generation Mexican American, she feels a sense of accomplishment. She and Alex came to the U.S. when they were just 2 years old. Now her mother and aunt work at the business.
“We’re pretty much leading the path for the rest of our family,” she said. “We pushed through to make it happen.”
Fountain Haus closed last year after just two years in operation. Before that, the space was home to HopCat and TikiCat.
