The 20-year-old Lawrence woman killed after a hit-and-run crash on Thursday was a University of Kansas student, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Elsa McGrain, 20, was out on a run around 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of E 1500 Road, near the Lawrence Regional Airport when she was struck by a vehicle.“A passerby notified dispatchers at 3:35 a.m. Friday, upon finding a person near the road. When deputies responded, they determined the person had died,” sheriff’s office spokesperson George Diepenbrock said in an email Friday afternoon.

McGrain was studying pre-medicine and was set to graduate in 2026, according to Diepenbrock.

“Our deputies and detectives continue to work diligently to investigate this thoroughly, find the driver involved and work appropriately through the justice system from there,” Diepenbrock said in a release.

Officials determined Saturday that the vehicle of interest is an all white truck with no side markings. Anyone who may have seen the vehicle on that road between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday is asked to call detective Lance Flachsbarth at (785)-393-5845 or the Douglas County Crime stoppers at 785-843-TIPS and leave contact information.
