An inmate at the Leavenworth County Jail was sentenced to more than five years of additional prison time Wednesday for biting off another inmate’s ear during a basketball game in 2022.

Alvaro Pertuz III, 25, was sentenced to 66 months after having been found guilty of one count of aggravated battery in August, according to a news release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

Pertuz was charged in July 2022 after a basketball game in the jail’s “Rec Pod.” He jumped on the back of a fellow inmate and bit off the top of the man’s ear, Thompson said.

At the time of the incident, Pertuz was serving a 66-month sentence for aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, according to a 2021 Leavenworth County court document.
