Missouri police officer shoots driver during chase in Jackson County

A Buckner police officer shot a person during a car chase Sunday morning, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The officer was pursuing a vehicle that was headed west on U.S. 24 Highway near Hoover Road around 1:24 a.m., according to a Missouri Highway Patrol Troop A post on X. As the suspect vehicle approached Blue Mills Road, it allegedly crossed over the eastbound lanes and briefly drove the wrong way.

The driver then drove back and accelerated forward, hitting the officer’s vehicle. That’s when the officer shot the suspect, according to the patrol.

The driver, injured with a gunshot wound, was arrested and taken to a hospital. Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, according to the patrol.

The Buckner officer was not injured.

The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting, but all other charges related to the incident are being investigated by the Buckner Police Department.

Buckner, a city of about 2,945 people, is located about 22 miles east of Kansas City in Jackson County.
