One of Yelp’s top restaurants in Missouri got its start in the middle of the West Plaza neighborhood.

The crowdsourced review website for restaurants, salons and other businesses posted its list of the top 100 restaurants in the state for October, and coming in at No. 2 is Bay Boy Specialty Sandwiches.

Bay Boy opened its doors at 4706 Holly St. in 2018 and was created by childhood friends Julian Garcia and Jake Wilson, according to previous Star reporting. They sell cold and hot sandwiches, all on Dutch Crunch bread made in-house. Garcia first started making Dutch Crunch bread when he worked at Johnny Jo’s Pizzeria as a twice-a-week popup, which is 210 feet away from the sandwich shop.

Yelp based its rankings on the ratings its users gave each restaurant. Bay Boy has a 4.8 out of 5-star rating on the website based on 434 reviews.

Its signature sandwich on the menu is El Jefe, a take on the classic Cuban sandwich. It’s made with Smoked Mojo pulled pork, sliced premium honey ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and hot pepper sauce on a buttered and toasted Dutch Crunch bread.

Other items on their menu include:

  • Kimchi grilled cheese: smoked gouda, provolone, mushrooms and chipotle mayo
  • Bay Boy: Molinari soppressata salami, mayo, mustard, housemade garlic sauce, original red pepper sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle, and your choice of cheese
  • The Gobbler: chipotle mayo, mesquite smoked turkey, Swiss cheese, roasted red bell peppers and lettuce

Bay Boy has a second location at 110 E. 18th Ave. in North Kansas City.

Another Kansas City restaurant makes the top 5

The restaurant owned by Scott Umschied opened its doors in 2017, but Umschied had a background in barbecue long before. He entered his first barbecue competition in 2009 under Buckwood Smokers with family and friends.

They serve brisket, burnt ends, pulled pork, chicken, sausage, ribs and turkey in a variety of forms. Visitors can order them as a plate meal with sides like baked beans cheesy potatoes and jalapeño apple slaw. They can also have the meats in a sandwich, taco, burrito or bowl.
