Former Olathe schools employee sentenced for indecent liberties with a child

A former Olathe School District employee accused of a sex crime involving a child has been sentenced to 3 years and 5 months in prison.

A Johnson County District Court judge sentenced Jason Barrett to 41 months in prison Wednesday. As part of a plea agreement, Barrett pleaded no contest to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child involving touching, as prosecutors dismissed a count of furnishing intoxicants to a minor in August.

The alleged crime occurred in September 2023, and the victim was said to be between 14 and 16 years old at the time, The Star reported previously.

An attorney for Barrett declined to comment Wednesday.

The Olathe School District previously told The Star Barrett was a special education paraprofessional from 2003 to 2005 and later from August 2009 to May 2023.

“We want to clarify that the allegations made against this employee did not occur during his time of employment, in fact, it occurred months afterward,” a district spokeswoman said last year. “Furthermore, his departure in May 2023 from the district was not connected to any allegations of this nature. “

A pending civil case in Johnson County also accuses Barrett of repeated sexual contact with a child throughout 2023, The Star reported previously. Barrett was known to the child, who was 12 and 13 years at the time he was allegedly sexually groomed and abused by Barrett, court documents said.

The lawsuit also names as defendants the groups KVC Health Systems and KVC Foundation for their alleged role in bringing Barrett into contact with the child.

The civil case has an August 2026 trial date.
