Kansas City Thai restaurant says it’s ‘closing for an unknown amount of time’
Waldo Thai — a beloved Kansas City restaurant of seven years — announced Wednesday that it’s “closing for an unknown amount of time.”
The restaurant at 8431 Wornall Road shared on social media that it will not operate past Friday. At least for now.
Scott Keithly, the restaurant’s chief financial officer, confirmed to The Star that the restaurant was closing but declined to answer follow-up questions about the future of the restaurant or the circumstances surrounding its closure.
The announcement comes months after longtime chef Pam Liberda and her husband, general manager Ted Liberda, announced they would be leaving.
At the time of his May departure, Ted told The Star the restaurant would close, at least for a little bit. He said he and his wife had been there from the restaurant’s inception in 2018.
“It’s gonna be operating under new management, possibly, but it’s gonna take some time for the turnaround,” he said of Waldo Thai at the time.
After The Star published Ted’s statement, Keithly contacted The Star in May to say that Waldo Thai would not close.
“(The Liberdas) made the decision this week that they were gonna move on, but we never told them we were gonna close the place,” Keithly said at the time. “We’re just gonna hire a new chef and keep operating.”
The restaurant also made a statement on social media at the time.
“Waldo Thai remains open. We’re still here—and we’re not going anywhere,” Waldo Thai said in May.
On Wednesday, however, Keithly verified that the restaurant would now close for an indefinite period.
