KC area woman loses unborn child after shooting. Fundraiser aims to help

A Kansas City area family is mourning the loss of their unborn child after a shooting in Sugar Creek last week injured a pregnant mother.

A GoFundMe page has been created for Ally and Austin Marshall, who are coping with the loss while she is recovering physically from the shooting.

The Marshalls were on their way to celebrate a friend’s birthday when they found themselves in the middle of a shooting, according to the fundraiser. They had just dropped off their twin daughters at another location when, while Ally Marshall was driving, gunfire erupted.

A bullet went through their car door, then struck Ally’s left side near her hip and fragmented into her bladder, the fundraiser says.

“Ally was rushed to the hospital where paramedics, surgeons, and hospital staff worked tirelessly to save her life,” the GoFundMe page says. “Thanks to their efforts—and the quick actions of a nearby neighbor—Ally is now stable and on the long road to recovery.” “Tragically, Ally and Austin’s baby boy, who was due in February, lost his heartbeat the next day on September 21st,” the fundraiser says.

Man charged in shooting

A man identified in court documents as Jermaine Hall has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and aggravated fleeing a stop or detention in connection with the shooting.

Sugar Creek police officers were called around 4:40 p.m. on Sept. 20 to the area of Kentucky Road and Sterling Avenue on reports of shots fired, according to court documents.

Officers were flagged down further east on Kentucky Road by Austin Marshall standing near a pulled-over vehicle. Austin Marshall identified himself as Ally Marshall’s husband and said his pregnant wife had been shot, court documents said.

Austin Marshall told police he was in the passenger side of their vehicle on his phone when he heard a popping sound. He and his wife turned and saw a man, later identified as Hall, allegedly point a gun at them and fire one round, which is when he said she was struck.

As officers were rendering aid to Ally Marshall, Austin Marshall identified Hall in a passing vehicle as it drove by, court documents said. A police pursuit ensued.

Three people in the area took over caring for Ally Marshall and transported her to the Sugar Creek Fire Department, court documents said. She was then taken to a hospital.

Officers eventually took Hall into custody. Hall allegedly told officers what happened was an accident, but has not admitted to discharging a firearm, according to court documents.

‘Unimaginable loss’

A family member who posted on the GoFundMe page thanked people for their prayers and support after the shooting. The fundraiser was organized to help with medical expenses, time away from work and the long recovery process ahead for the family, the fundraiser said.

“This unimaginable loss and the ongoing medical challenges ahead have placed an incredible burden on their family,” the fundraiser page says. “Ally and Austin are devoted parents to their twin girls and now face a long healing journey, both physically and emotionally.”

“Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference in helping this family through such a devastating time.”
