Worlds of Fun adjusts chaperone policy after false gunshots incident

Worlds of Fun has made changes to its chaperone policy after Kansas City police reportedfireworks led to reports of gunfire, which sent guests at the amusement park running for the exits last weekend.

The amusement park, which is owned by amusement park corporation Six Flags, now requires that attendees 17 years old and younger have a chaperone at least 21 years old to be admitted and remain in the park. The previous policy was that guests 15 years old and younger required a chaperone after 4 p.m.

There can also only be one chaperone for every five underage guests. Previously, there were no limits on the number of guests one chaperone could accompany.

Guests without chaperones will not be allowed to enter the park.

“We always have maintained the right to change or enforce the Code of Conduct policies,” Six Flags spokesperson Sara Gorgon told The Star on Friday. “We look to maintain our family-friendly environment and have updated the chaperone policy to include guests 17 years and younger (rather than 15 years).”

The recent incident happened during the park’s opening night of its Halloween Haunt event./

On Sept. 13, police officers working off-duty reported possible shots fired or the sound of shots, according to Kansas City police spokesperson Sgt. Phil DiMartino. Several agencies, including the Kansas City police and fire departments, responded to the amusement park at 4545 Worlds of Fun Avenue around 9:21 p.m..

On Monday, police reported the alleged shots were caused by fireworks, which was determined after detectives investigated, assisted by Worlds of Fun security.

Worlds of Fun’s chaperone policy began in April 2023, after law enforcement and park security broke up a fight on another Saturday night involving between 100 and 150 kids who were removed from the park. Police estimated 300 teens were involved in that incident, though park officials argued the true number was smaller.

“Worlds of Fun reserves the right to revise or modify this Code of Conduct with or without notice,” the park’s policies state.
