Gunfire reported at Worlds of Fun determined to be fireworks, police say
Less than two days after a report of gunfire sent people running at Worlds of Fun Saturday night, emptying the amusement park on the first night of their Halloween Haunt event, police have determined the noises were caused by fireworks.
Police officers working off-duty reported possible shots fired or the sound of shots, according to Kansas City police spokesperson Sgt. Phil DiMartino. Several agencies, including the Kansas City police and fire departments, responded to the amusement park at 4545 Worlds of Fun Avenue around 9:21 p.m..
One person was transported to a hospital for an unrelated medical issue, according to Kansas City Fire Department spokesperson Michael Hopkins.
Police reported Sunday there was no evidence of shots being fired; however, officers broke up several fights among juveniles while on scene.
On Monday, police reported the alleged shots were caused by fireworks, which was determined after detectives investigated, assisted by Worlds of Fun security.
“They have determined there is NO indication of any gunfire that took place that night, and the noises heard were the result of fireworks,” police spokesperson Capt. Jake Becchina said in an email.
In a statement, Worlds of Fun, which is owned by the amusement park corporation Six Flags, said all tickets from Saturday have been returned to ticket holders and will be valid for another visit through Nov. 1.
Park goers can present their original tickets at the park entrance to gain entry at no additional charge, the park stated. World’s of Fun’s Halloween Haunt event runs through Nov. 1.
“The well-being of our guests and associates is a top priority,” the statement said. “The concerns were unsubstantiated; however, we understand the impact to our guests’ experience.”
