Kansas City is adding a new bike lane, angled parking through Midtown. See where
Broadway Boulevard is officially getting a bike lane through Midtown.
The city is planning to give Broadway a “road diet” between 31st Street and 43rd Street, or making changes to the road’s layout to slow down traffic and make the road safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
Officials first presented possible design concepts over the summer and asked residents to offer feedback to help shape the final version, which was revealed this week. Resurfacing work will begin this fall and could start as soon as next week.
The new design will add a cycle track, similar to the one along Gillham Plaza, and angled parking on parts of the road while reducing the number of lanes along the stretch. The angled parking would not be backed-in parking.
According to a city presentation, the road diet along Broadway will include:
- From 31st Street to Linwood Boulevard: Angled parking on the east side of the street, where there is currently parallel parking; one lane of northbound traffic; two lanes of southbound traffic that merge into one
- From Linwood Boulevard to Westport Road: A cycle track on the east side of the road with parallel parking next to it, separating bikes from driving cars; one driving lane in each direction; angled parking on the west side of the street.
- From Westport Road to 43rd Street: One driving lane in each direction; parallel parking; space where the sidewalks could be extended in the future.
There will also be work to add medians and improve landscaping.
The road diet is expected to add 45 seconds of travel time while going northbound and 1 minute and 17 seconds while going southbound.
City data shows that there were five fatal crashes along the stretch of Broadway between 2015 and 2024, while there were 33 crashes with serious injuries and 415 crashes with minor injuries. The fatal crash average by year is increasing even though traffic along the road has decreased.
