Eight children were injured in a school bus crash Friday afternoon on Interstate 29 near St. Joseph, Missouri, police said.

The St. Joseph Police Department sent out an alert at 3:44 p.m. asking people to avoid northbound Interstate 29 near the 35 mile marker, according to the alert.

A school bus registered to Olivet Baptist Church in Westwood, Kansas, blew its front and rear passenger-side tires before leaving the roadway and overturning, according to a post from Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop H on X, formerly Twitter.

Kansas City Scout previously listed the accident as a two-vehicle crash; however, only the school bus was involved, according to the post on X.

Two children had serious injuries, while six had minor injuries, according to the post. All were taken to area hospitals.

It’s unclear how many children were on the bus at the time of the crash.
