SUV crashes, overturns on southern edge of Swope Park, driver, passenger injured

A driver and passenger suffered critical injuries after their SUV ran off the road and crashed into a light pole early Monday on the southern edge of Swope Park, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded to the wreck around 1:40 a.m. in the 7500 block of Oldham Road, Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department said.

A preliminary investigation revealed a white GMC Acadia was headed south at high speeds when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, veered off the road, crossed a grassy shoulder and struck a light pole before overturning, DiMartino said.

Neither the driver nor the front-seat passenger was wearing a seatbelt, DiMartino said.

The two were taken to a hospital where the driver remained in critical condition Monday morning. The passenger was in stable condition.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
