Driver critically injured after hitting concrete barrier on U.S. 71 in KC

One person was seriously injured after a crash on U.S. 71 Highway in Kansas City early Wednesday .

Officers responded just after midnight to Highway 71 near 51st Street in Kansas City. The crash happened as a black Honda Civic sped north on Highway 71, according to a preliminary investigation.

Just south of 51st Street, the Honda allegedly sideswiped a blue Hyundai Kona that was also traveling north on Highway 71, according to a crash report. After striking the Hyundai, the Honda ran off the road to the left and struck a concrete barrier head on in the center median, according to a crash report.

Paramedics transported the Honda driver to a hospital with serious injuries, and they remained in critical condition Wednesday morning, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai was not injured in the crash, police said.

An investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing.
