Passenger seriously hurt after being ejected from speeding car, police say

One person is hospitalized with serious injuries after being thrown out of a speeding car that had its passenger door open, police said.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded just after 7:30 p.m. to East Red Bridge Road and Bennington Avenue. The crash happened as a Ford Mustang sped west on Red Bridge Road with its passenger door open, according to a preliminary investigation.

The Ford made a quick left turn from Red Bridge onto south Bennington. As the Ford made the turn, the unrestrained front seat passenger was ejected from the vehicle, according to a crash report.

The passenger hit their head on a concrete curb, police said. Paramedics transported them to a hospital with critical injuries, a crash report said.

As of Wednesday morning, the passenger was still in critical condition, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesman.

An investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing.
