This downtown Kansas City building will be demolished after it collapsed
A downtown Kansas City building that partially collapsed earlier this summer is expected to be fully demolished.
An old parking garage at 1219 Wyandotte St., across the street from Barney Allis Plaza, partially collapsed the evening of July 8. The fire department reported that parts of the facade and some of the parapet separated from the garage, sending bricks crashing to the sidewalk and street below.
Further inspection showed that more concrete had fallen from the front of the building. No injuries were reported.
The city has labeled the building dangerous, and records show the city issued a permit on Aug. 4 for a contractor to demolish the entire parking garage structure.
An emergency order dated July 11 required the building to be demolished due to safety concerns presented by the building’s condition, according to city documents.
City inspectors previously inspected the building in January and May after the city fielded concerns about the brick facade, records show.
The parking garage was previously eyed for demolition after a proposal emerged in 2020 to replace the old parking garage with a new one and build a 14-story office tower on the site, the Kansas City Business Journal reported at the time.
The real estate firm tied to the property did not return a request for comment about future plans for the site.
Newspaper archives reference a parking garage on the site going back a century. The building is next door to the historic Aladdin building, where work is ongoing to convert the former hotel into apartments.
