Street closed after bricks fall during partial building collapse in downtown KC
A partial building collapse closed a street in downtown Kansas City overnight, a fire department spokesman said.
Firefighters responded shortly before 8:30 p.m. to reports of a building collapse in the 1200 block of Wyandotte Street, said Battalion Chief Riley Nolan with the Kansas City Fire Department.
After arriving, fire crews reported that parts of the facade and some of the parapet separated from the parking garage, sending bricks crashing to the sidewalk and street below, Nolan said.
Firefighters blocked off areas on the south and west sides of the building to prevent pedestrians from approaching the area. Meanwhile, Kansas City police officers blocked off Wyandotte in both directions.
Fire crews used a drone for aerial views of the building, and to search inside, which came back all clear, Nolan said.
Kansas City’s dangerous buildings department responded to the scene to investigate. Wyandotte remained closed from 12th to 13th streets overnight.
No injuries were reported when the bricks fell from the building, Nolan said.
