Photos capture somber funeral and procession for WyCo deputy Elijah Ming

The residents of the Kansas City metro woke up to a gloomy day on Monday as rain clouds darkened the day. The gloom set the mood for the event of the day, the funeral services for Wyandotte County Sheriff’s deputy Elijah Ming. Ming was shot to death when he responded to a call in Kansas City, Kansas, on July 26.

More than 100 uniformed officers and hundreds of other civilians were on hand at Children’s Mercy Park where the funeral was held Monday morning. The casket for Deputy Ming was carried in by a pallbearer detail of Wyandotte County Sheriff’s officers in dark uniforms and all wearing dark gray cowboy hats. A corp of bagpipers and drummers provided the somber music for the solemn entry.

Law enforcement officers from across Kansas and Missouri were on hand for the memorial service as well as officers from other states. Ming was eulogized during the service and more pomp that comes with a traditional law enforcement funeral service was carried out including the folding and presenting of the flag that draped his casket, a 21-gun salute (seven riflemen firing three volleys), and the playing of taps.

The Kansas Highway Patrol flew three helicopters over the stadium in tribute and a final radio call was made over the department’s radios and broadcast on the stadium speakers to thank Deputy Ming for his service.

After the funeral service, Ming’s casket was loaded into a hearse decorated with U.S. flags and a miles-long procession looped through Kansas City, Kansas, including along 7th Street where it passed local government offices. Hundreds of people lined the route to pay their respects to the fallen officer.
