KCK man charged with capital murder in fatal shooting of deputy Elijah Ming
A Kansas City, Kansas man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Wyandotte County Sheriff’s deputy on Saturday, according to court records.
The Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office charged Shawn Harris, 38, with capital murder this week in the killing of Elijah Ming, a nearly nine-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office. Harris was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
Harris was arrested Sunday morning after he was released from an area hospital. He was treated with non-life threatening injuries from a shootout with law enforcement in KCK’s Argentine neighborhood the day before.
The shooting happened in the 2600 block of S. 30th Street in KCK when other law enforcement officers were providing protection while a woman moved out of a house.
Then, an individual inside the house, later identified as Harris, confronted Ming and they exchanged gunfire, injuring Ming, according to KCK Police Chief Karl Oakman.
Officers from both KCKPD and the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office then exchanged gunfire with Harris, Oakman said.
Harris then allegedly barricaded himself inside the home. He eventually came out around 5 p.m. after officers led a negotiation.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called on to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
The area in the Argentine neighborhood of KCK is a mostly residential area, blocks away from a KCKPD station and the Maple Hill Cemetery. It’s on the edge of the Turner neighborhood line.
Harris has been in custody without bond in the Johnson County Detention Center in Olathe, according to online booking records. He will appear over Zoom in Wyandotte County District Court for a preliminary hearing 2 p.m. Tuesday.
