A man killed in a single vehicle crash in Cass County Sunday has been identified as a well-known Kansas City area chef.

Brent Gunnels, 38, was a chef at The W, a cocktail lounge located in downtown Lee’s Summit. In a post announcing his passing, The W said he would be greatly missed by all who knew him.

“He was a shining star in the culinary world and a dream to have behind the bar at The W,” the post said.

Gunnels previously worked at Il Lazzarone, Clay & Fire, Julep, Tree Haus Cafe and Freshwater, according to his LinkedIn page and his Facebook account.

Gunnels was driving around 2 a.m. in Freeman, Missouri when he went off the right side of the road, hitting an embankment, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

The vehicle went airborne and hit a rock bluff, overturning before coming to a stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
