We finally have a date for the KC Streetcar extension. Here’s when it opens
After more than eight years of anticipation and construction, the Kansas City Streetcar’s Main Street Extension has a grand opening date.
The grand opening will be held Oct. 24, according to a Kansas City Streetcar Authority press release and social media posts.Donna Mandlebaum, spokesperson for the streetcar authority, said that Oct. 24 will be the first time the public will be able to ride the rails from the River Market to the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
The details of the opening ceremony and the hours of the route will be announced later, Mandlebaum said.
Like now, the streetcar will run every 10-15 minutes and be free to ride, according to Mandlebaum.
Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a press release, “The grand opening of the Main Street Extension represents our community’s investment in generational growth, providing more opportunities for more residents and visitors alike while remaining fare-free for all.”
The 3.5 mile southern extension more than doubles the length of the loop. The fleet has grown from six to 14 vehicles, added an additional 40,000 feet of overhead catenary wire and more than tripled the streetcar workforce.
The project has been in the making since 2017, when midtown residents approved a new taxation district to pay for the project, which also received $200 million in federal funding.
Starting in 2021, drivers navigated cones and heavy machinery on Main: first from utility companies like KC Water and AT&T moving their underground infrastructure, then from streetcar construction crews.
Crews laid the final track late in December 2024 and began testing in January.
The streetcar system will expand again in 2026, when the riverfront streetcar extension, which will run from the River Market to Berkley Riverfront Park, is expected to open.
