A man is dead after a shooting at a Kansas City apartment complex Sunday morning, police say.

Police were called just before 6 a.m. to the 1300 block of East 89th Street on reports of gunshots, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department.

Officers were led to an apartment where they found an adult man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was declared dead shortly after arrival, according to Gonzalez.

Police do not yet know what lead to the shooting and do not have anyone in custody, though they believe the shooting happened outside in the road and not inside the apartment unit. The investigation is ongoing.

This marks the city’s 93rd homicide this year, compared to 84 this time last year, according to data tracked by the Star, which includes fatal police shootings.

Anyone with information or who was around the area and may have heard something is asked to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the tipline.
