Two people were seriously hurt when a motorcycle crashed in east Independence Saturday evening, police said.

Officers responded just after 7 p.m. to Truman Road and Missouri 78 Highway on a reported crash.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle drove around road closure barricades at the intersection and continued east into a closed portion of the road.

The motorcycle then struck a dirt embankment that blocked the road. The driver and passenger of the motorcycle were ejected off the vehicle, police said.

The driver and passenger both sustained serious injuries. Paramedics transported them to a hospital. The driver and passenger allegedly did not wear helmets at the time of the crash.

Police continue to investigate what led to the crash.
