One person was killed and two others were seriously injured in a house fire on a farm in rural Missouri near Independence Friday, a fire department spokesman confirmed.

Firefighters with the Fort Osage Fire Protection District initially responded to a call about the fire shortly after 5 a.m. at North Lake City Valley Road and East Bundschu Road, near Buckner, according to Eric Michel, a spokesman with the Independence Fire Department.

The Independence Fire Department was called to assist in extinguishing the fire.

While crews were searching the home, firefighters found one person dead and two others who were seriously injured, Michel said.

Officials have not yet publicly confirmed the name, age or gender of the individual who died.

While conducting a search of the house, Michel said, an Independence firefighter fell down stairs. They were treated at a hospital and released a few hours later.

Firefighters have been working for several hours to put out the blaze, Michel said. By around 10:30, most of the fire had been put out.

Investigators from the Independence Police Department and Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office will work to determine what caused the fire, Michel said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
