A suspect has been charged after allegedly exchanging gunfire with Shawnee police Tuesday, according to a Johnson County court document.

Isaac Alfonso Ortiz, 19, faces one count each of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and interference with a law enforcement officer, according to court documents.

Officers responded just after 5 a.m. to West 67th Street and Lackman Road on reports of gunfire. Upon arriving, they did not find anyone injured, police spokesperson Emily Rittman said.

As officers attempted to take Ortiz into custody, the man fired several shots, Rittman said. An officer returned fire. No one was struck during the exchange, and Ortiz was arrested.

Ortiz did not appear for a scheduled preliminary hearing in Johnson County court Wednesday because of “behavior issues,” according to court documents. He is set to appear for a preliminary status hearing July 3.

Ortiz has previously pleaded guilty to interference with a LEO in juvenile court, according to court records.
