Suspect in custody after allegedly exchanging gunfire with Shawnee police

A suspect is in custody after allegedly exchanging gunfire with Shawnee police in Shawnee early Tuesday, police said.

Officers responded just after 5 a.m. to West 67th Street and Lackman Road for a 911 call about the sound of gunfire.

When officers arrived to investigate, they did not find anyone injured, said Emily Rittman, a police spokesperson.

As officers attempted to take a person into custody, the suspect fired several shots, Rittman said. An officer returned fire.

No one was struck during the exchange, and the person was arrested, Rittman said. There was no ongoing threat to the public.

Police have not yet provided the age or gender of the suspect.

As part of standard procedure, the Johnson County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Investigative Team is investigating. Any further information will be released by the investigative team.
