Bicyclist killed in crash with semi in Kansas City’s Northeast area

A bicyclist died after crashing into a semitractor-trailer Sunday afternoon in Kansas City’s Northeast area, a police spokesman said.

The crash occurred about 12:49 p.m. at the intersection of St. John and North Topping avenues, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

According to the preliminary investigation, the semi was headed east on St. John at the time of the crash, Becchina said. The bicyclist was headed south on North Topping, which is a northbound one-way street.

The bicyclist struck the side of the semi and was pronounced dead at the scene, Becchina said.

The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information was available on Monday, Becchina said.

The bicyclist’s death is the 29th traffic fatality this year, which compares to 46 at this time last year.
