Prosecutors have charged a 21-year-old man in the killing of another 21-year-old man in a Gladstone apartment May 16.

Officers were called around 2:15 a.m. to 6002 NE Bircain Place on a call for the sound of gunfire, and when they arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, police said. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gladstone police identified the 21-year-old man who died as DeVante Nathaniel Tyler, of Kansas City.

Police arrested 21-year-old Bobby Colding. He was charged with counts of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in Clay County Circuit Court. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Colding was found at the scene when police arrived and allegedly told investigators he was the shooter, according to court documents. A firearm was taken from his pocket.

Colding told investigators the victim had been in his apartment in a room with another person and described a struggle involving Tyler and others in the residence. At one point, Colding allegedly said he did not know what was happening and feared Tyler would hurt others or himself, according to court documents.

Colding said after grabbing Tyler, the other man hit him and pushed him, so he shot him once, according to court documents. A detective noted in court documents that the other man was unarmed.

“Bobby Colding stated he was defending himself, but feels horrible,” the detective wrote. “Bobby Colding advised he regrets what happened.”
