An Independence man died of his injuries Thursday after being hit by a car while crossing the street Wednesday.

The crash took place around 6:15 a.m. at 23rd Street and Union Avenue, according to Sgt. Steven Boles, an Independence Police Department spokesperson.

Thomas A. Laroque, 20, was crossing 23rd Street when he was hit by an eastbound 2007 Toyota Prius, according to Boles. Laroque was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, where he was pronounced dead Thursday.

The driver of the Prius remained on the scene after the crash and has been in touch with IPD, according to Boles. Their name has not been publicly released.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
