Grain Valley man charged after allegedly shooting man in face during drug deal
A Grain Valley man faces charges in Jackson County court after allegedly shooting a man in the face during a Monday night altercation outside a dollar store.
De’Shawn R. Hunley, 20, has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action, both felonies. Prosecutors think the shooting resulted from an argument around a planned marijuana sale, according to court documents.
Officers with the Grain Valley Police Department responded around 6 p.m. to a Dollar General franchise at 1701 NE Main St., according to GVPD.
According to court documents, witnesses directed responding police officers to a car with a flat tire parked on a nearby street, where officers encountered the victim covered in blood. Court documents indicate that the man had been shot through the back of the jaw.
Another witness, initially detained by GVPD alongside Hunley, allegedly told investigators that he and a third man had accompanied Hunley on foot to the Dollar General in order to buy marijuana from the victim. The witness allegedly said that Hunley grew angry after the victim refused to show him the marijuana before the sale was made, court documents read.
The witness then alleged that Hunley tried to reach into the victim’s car and take the marijuana in question before shooting multiple times at the victim as he drove away.
The shooting was filmed and photographed by several witnesses, all of whom reported hearing three to five shots before seeing Hunley run south from the store, court documents read.
Court documents indicate that when searching Hunley’s house, GVPD detectives found a handgun matching bullets found at the scene of the shooting, along with a set of clothes matching witnesses’ video footage of the shooter.
The victim has not been publicly identified. His condition was unknown as of Wednesday evening.
Hunley is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond, according to court records. He will next appear in Jackson County court at 1 p.m. April 22 for a bond review hearing.
