Kansas City plans to repave these roads in the coming months. See where
If you feel like you’re playing Mario Kart on Kansas City’s streets while dodging potholes and metal plates, you’re not the only one.
Some of the city’s roads have been in place for longer than their intended 15-year lifespan, but Michael Shaw, director of the Public Works department in Kansas City, says that’s changing.
“I will always tell you, the road to success is always under construction,” Shaw said.
The department’s goal is to resurface 400 lane miles in the next 12 months, of the approximately 6,000 lane miles throughout the municipality. In the last 11 months, crews replaced more than 388 lane miles of pavement.
This fiscal year from May 2025 through April 2026, council members set aside approximately $30 million for resurfacing efforts. The dollars are split evenly between the north, central and south regions of the city.
How are road construction projects planned?
It is hard for drivers to know where and when they’ll encounter construction on city streets. That’s because a lot of organizations, like KC Water and Spire, have to dig under the roads, and they don’t always share their plans ahead of time. Shaw said his department is working on making this process more transparent to taxpayers.
The roads on the list below are not the only ones that will get upgrades in the upcoming year.
The city’s GO bonds will pay for other road reconstruction projects, like reconstructing North Oak Trafficway from 42nd to Vivion Road.
In April and May, city crews are filling hundreds of potholes after the winter weather. Additionally, city law states that if utilities companies cut into a road resurfaced in the last five years, the company would need to repave a larger swath of road.
Construction has begun on I-70 upgrades within city limits as well.
