A former Johnson County employee made his first appearance in court Monday after he was charged with child sex crimes earlier this month.

Christopher Thomas Wehunt, 41, faces three charges of sexual exploitation of a child. Prosecutors allege he coerced a child under 18 into sexual activity on at least two occasions between August and October 2024, according to court documents.

In addition, Wehunt is accused of communicating with at least 10 children under 18 in order to solicit nude photos from them, court documents read. He was also found to be in possession of material depicting the sexual abuse of a child.

Court documents detailing Wehunt’s alleged sexual abuses have not been made public. Court records indicate that Wehunt was charged on April 2, but his case file was sealed until his arrest on April 11.

Wehunt was previously employed by Johnson County as a communications technician for about 10 years, starting in 2015, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Wehunt is currently being held in the Johnson County Adult Detention Center on a $50,000 bond, according to court records. He will next appear in court at 11 a.m. April 23 for a preliminary status hearing.
