A pedestrian crossing Interstate 435 died after he was struck by a semi hauling a tanker trailer early Monday, forcing the highway to close for several hours in Kansas City’s Northland, a police spokesman said.

The fatal crash occurred at about 4:10 a.m. Monday along northbound I-435 near Northeast Parvin Road, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the semi was headed north on I-435 from Missouri 210 when a pedestrian wearing dark clothing attempted to cross the highway, DiMartino said.

The semi struck the pedestrian. Emergency medical crews took the pedestrian to a hospital, where the medical staff pronounced the person deceased.

DiMartino said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The fatal crash closed northbound I-435 for several hours. The highway reopened about 7:15 a.m.
