Firefighters say cause of Olathe house fire may be lightning strike, witnessed by neighbors

Firefighters say a lightning strike may have caused a house fire in Olathe Wednesday morning as severe thunderstorms made their way through the Kansas City metro.

Crews responded just before 5:30 a.m. to a house near Santa Barbara Boulevard and Pasadena Drive on a reported fire. According to a social media post by the Olathe Fire Department, neighbors heard a “lightning crack” then saw flames coming from the roof.

Firefighters from the Olathe and Lenexa fire departments worked to put out the fire, which caused significant damage, the social media post said.

No one was injured. Investigators are working to make a final determination on what caused the fire.

Two people were displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, the fire department said.
