Kansas City man shot by police after multi-state chase charged with three felonies
A Kansas City man who was shot by police while attempting to evade officers Tuesday now faces three felony charges in Jackson County court.
Robert Lee Beebe, 34, was charged Thursday with resisting arrest by fleeing, as well as tampering with a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm. Fleeing officers from multiple agencies, Beebe’s altercation with police ended with him allegedly running his car into a Kansas City Police Department patrol car just before an officer shot him, according to court records.
KCPD officers initially attempted to pull over a grey Jeep SUV during a traffic stop around 5:18 p.m., according to court documents. The Jeep, in which Beebe was a passenger, fled to a parking garage in Kansas City, Kansas, where its occupants got into a black Infiniti.
Both Kansas Highway Patrol troopers and a KCPD helicopter followed Beebe — now driving the Infiniti — to the Kansas-Missouri state line, where the Highway Patrol disengaged from the chase, according to court documents.
Around the state line, the passenger of the Inifiniti — previously the driver of the Jeep — bailed from the car and was taken into custody, court documents stated. The KCPD helicopter followed Beebe as he allegedly drove into oncoming traffic and ran several traffic lights, then pulled into a parking lot in the 1600 block of Jefferson Street in Kansas City’s Westside neighborhood.
Two KCPD officers reportedly approached the Infiniti in a patrol car, then got out and told Beebe to exit the vehicle, according to court documents. A witness who was participating in a police ride-along with the responding officers during the incident said that she saw Beebe back his car up twice, hitting the police car she was in on his second pass, court documents read.
One of the responding officers then allegedly fired at least five shots at Beebe, hitting and injuring him, according to court documents. Neither the ride-along passenger nor the other officer saw the gun fire, court documents read.
The shooting took place around 5:48 p.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which was dispatched to investigate the incident around 7 p.m. Tuesday. After the shooting, Beebe was transported to a local hospital with non-fatal injuries.
After the shooting, investigators determined that the Infiniti had been stolen, according to court records. Investigators also recovered a loaded gun from the car.
At the time of the incident, Beebe was on probation in Missouri for possession of a controlled substance, a felony, according to court records.
Beebe is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond, according to court records. He will next appear in court on April 16 for a preliminary hearing.
