A man was injured after being shot by a Kansas City police officerTuesday evening, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The shooting took place around 5:48 p.m. in the 1600 block of Jefferson Street, in the Westside neighborhood of Kansas City.

The MSHP was called to investigate the incident around 7 p.m., the highway patrol shared on social media.

While fleeing a traffic stop, the driver crossed from Missouri to Kansas and back, and then drove into Westside while being pursued by a Kansas City Police Department helicopter, according to MSHP spokesperson Corporal Justin Ewing.

Multiple KCPD officers in police cars caught up with the suspect at a parking lot, Ewing said. Two officers exited their cars and began issuing commands to the driver, Ewing said.

The driver then allegedly drove at the officers and hit one of the responding KCPD patrol cars, at which point one of the officers allegedly shot the driver, Ewing said.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Ewing.

He was in stable condition as of Tuesday night. He has not been publicly identified.

None of the police officers on scene were injured during the incident.

Several people witnessed the shooting, according to Ewing.

Along with interviewing eyewitnesses, the MSHP’s investigation will include a review of body-camera footage filmed by all the officers involved in or privy to the shooting.

The helicopter involved in the incident was not called specifically to the area to follow the suspect’s car, Ewing said, but happened to be close by when KCPD officers put out an alert.

The Kansas City Police Department declined to comment on the shooting, stating that all related communications will be handled by the MSHP.
