A Raytown High School student is in custody after allegedly bringing a firearm to school, the Raytown Police Department confirmed Wednesday.
In a message sent out to families, the Raytown School District said a student reported suspicious activity of another student, which led to the discovery of a weapon.
Raytown Police confirmed the weapon recovered was a handgun.
“The administration acted swiftly in partnership with the Raytown Police Department and (school security officers) to ensure the safety of students and staff,” the district statement said.
No one was hurt in the incident.
“I am proud that we have an environment where parents and students report anything that might be suspicious,” the district said in a statement. “This helps us keep our school a safe environment to learn and work.”
According to a Raytown Police Department spokesperson, the student was in the custody of school security when officers arrived. Officers transported the student to the Jackson County Juvenile Center.

District warns against bringing weapons to school
A district statement to parents advised that students should never bring anything that can be used as a weapon to school, including a gun, knife, razor, or other objects.
Students who suspect someone has a weapon, even a toy weapon should report it to a teacher, counselor or administrator, the district said.
“Possessing a weapon on any school district property is prohibited and will not be tolerated,” the district said in a statement. “Students who violate the student code of conduct will face disciplinary consequences and legal actions.”
The district also asked parents to check students’ backpacks before school.
“We will continue to be vigilant in providing a safe environment for our students and staff,” the district said.
