Renovation update: KU’s Memorial Stadium getting massive scoreboard. See photos, video

University of Kansas football fans will have a new way to keep track of the games at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

Construction crews elevated in boom lifts worked installing a massive new scoreboard on Wednesday in the south end of the stadium in Lawrence The installation is a component of the ongoing $450 million in major upgrades to the stadium as part of the University of Kansas’ new Gateway District.

The first phase of construction includes a complete rebuild of the southwest, west, and north sides of the stadium, which dates back to 1921 when the first game was played in the then-named Kansas Memorial Stadium. Improvements encompass a new conference center on the north end, elevated seating, closer premium seating, and the new scoreboard.

The new scoreboard is two-and-a-half times larger than the previous one and sits approximately 60 feet closer to the field. Interior renovations to the weight room and locker room at the Anderson Family Football Complex, adjacent to the stadium, were completed and unveiled in August of 2023.

Construction at the football stadium remains on schedule for completion before the start of the 2025 season. University of Kansas Athletic Director Travis Goff stated last fall that the remodeled facility’s capacity will be “40-thousand something” for the 2025 season opener on August 23, when the Jayhawks will take on the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Here are photos of the renovation in progress.
