An attempted carjacking led to an officer-involved shooting in Kansas City Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Officers responded at 4 p.m. to a call regarding a possible carjacking near E 11th Street and Elmwood Avenue in the Lykins neighborhood of Kansas City, according to KCPD spokesperson Sgt. Phil DiMartino.

The alleged carjacker drove the stolen vehicle to 9th Street and Van Brunt Avenue, where an altercation with officers ensued, according to DiMartino. As the interactions escalated, responding officers and the carjacking suspect fired guns at each other.

It was not immediately clear Wednesday who fired their weapon first. No one was injured in the shootout, DiMartino said.

After exchanging at least one round of gunfire with officers, the suspect drove away. Officers followed in their car to the Lewis and Clark Viaduct in Kansas City, Kansas, where they arrested the alleged carjacker.
