Kansas Citians know there’s a big Chiefs game coming up when fountains around town start flowing red. They know it’s not some plumbing disaster.

It’s customary for the town known as the City of Fountains to dump red coloring — is that Red Dye No. 15? — into some of its 200 or so fountains to celebrate season openers, “Monday Night Football” matchups, Red Fridays and the like.

But some of Kansas City’s guests this weekend for the AFC Championship Game between the Chiefs and Buffalo Bills have never seen this before ... and they are stumped.

The ribbing kicked off Saturday with this tweet on X — seen 11 million times as of Sunday morning — from Joshua Bessex, a photojournalist for The Buffalo News.

He posted video of the red fountain outside Crown Center and wrote: “The #ChiefsKingdom red fountains in downtown KC are a little ... um ...”

And thus, the flood gates opened.

Let the jokes about sacrifices of virgins and animals commence.

“As a horror fan I think this is just great.”

“It’s giving ‘the shining.’”

“The devil magic is already starting.”

“Taylor Swift sacrificed the goat for the refs to win the game for them.”

“Those are the tears of Chiefs fans when they lose tomorrow.”

“Yeah, that doesn’t give off the best impression. Unless they’re really leaning into the whole villain thing.”

“I thought we banned red dye no 3.”

Of course, Chiefs Kingdom chimed in, too.

“ATTENTION: Kansas City is the city of fountains. It’s normal for our fountains to be chiefs red for playoffs. Y’all must have a boring city. All teams have champion merch prepped prior to a big game. That’s been a thing forever. Y’all bills fans are looking pathetic,” tweeted Kansas City sports connoisseur Sierra Jasso.

And even one Philadelphia Eagles fan had something to say.
