Kansas City, Kansas, man sentenced after shooting police officer in 2020: Prosecutor
A Kansas City, Kansas, man was sentenced Thursday to more than 21 years in prison for shooting a police officer in 2020.
A Johnson County jury found Jesse James Flaugher, 37, guilty of attempted second-degree murder in October, as well as of firearm possession by a felon.
Flaugher had been originally charged with attempted capital murder, according to court records.
The shooting took place after a hit-and-run in Overland Park around 4 p.m., December 15, 2020. After the crash, Kansas City Kansas, police officer Daniel Vance pursued Flaugher in his car to County Line Road and Conser Street on the border between Johnson County and Wyandotte County.
There, Flaugher stepped out of his car and shot Vance in the arm and chest.
Vance returned fire, according to the Johnson County Office of the District Attorney, but did not injure Flaugher.
The police officer ultimately made a full recovery from his own gunshot wounds.
After the shooting, Flaugher fled in his car before abandoning it elsewhere in Johnson County. He was ultimately arrested in rural Miami County and held on a $1 million cash bond.
Flaugher was previously charged with aggravated assault in Oklahoma, according to court documents. He will serve the 247-month sentence handed down on Thursday consecutively with his Oklahoma convictions.
