Kansas City, Kansas, fire truck slides off road on way to barn fire that killed 3 horses
A Kansas City, Kansas, fire truck slid off an icy road and into a ditch on its way to fight a barn fire in Wyandotte County Wednesday.
Three horses died in the fire that destroyed most of a barn near South 82nd Street and Richland Avenue, said Krystal McFeders, a spokesperson for the United Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas.
The fire truck went off the road when it swerved to avoid hitting a fire hydrant, according to McFeders. It slid into a ditch, and its arrival at the barn was delayed.
No other animals were killed or injured in the fire, McFeders said, and there were no damages to the fire truck as a result of the crash.
Before the fire truck slid off the road, fire personnel had also been preparing to respond to a second fire on South Merriam Lane. No one was killed or injured in the second fire either, according to McFeders.
The Unified Government suspended plowing operations overnight Monday, amid criticism from residents around poorly cleared roads. Crews worked 12-hour shifts to clear roads in Wyandotte County during the day Tuesday, with a smaller crew working Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
About 70% of the county’s neighborhood routes had been plowed by Tuesday, according to the United Government.
