Two older adults have been identified as the victims of a fatal car crash caused by an apparent illegal street race Monday morning.

Around 10:25 a.m. Monday, a black Chrysler and a silver Dodge Charger were allegedly street racing south on Wornall Road when the Chrysler struck a Honda CRV turning left, according to police.

Verne Zugenbuhler, 91, and Diane Zugenbuhler, 72, who were in the Honda, were pronounced dead at the scene. The pair had been turning left onto Carondelet Drive from Wornall Road when the speeding Chrysler collided with their car.

Kansas City police identified the Zugenbuhlers as the deceased parties Thursday.

The driver of the Chrysler, who has not been publicly named, has been hospitalized with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening. KCPD is working with prosecutors to determine if charges will be filed against them.

In September, the Kansas City Council unanimously passed a city law that raises fines for those caught participating in illegal street races, or “sideshows.” Under the new law, participants can be fined $250, $500 or $1,000 for a first, second or third offense.

Spectators can also face a $100 fine, and their vehicles are liable to be impounded.
