Will Mariah Carey and the Kansas City Chiefs become our new Christmas Day tradition?
Will we look back some day at 2024 as the year we decided we can’t have NFL games on Dec. 25 without the Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey?
Will Wednesday launch a new tradition for NFL fans?
Netflix, set to stream two games Wednesday — including the Chiefs-Steelers at noon CST — is bringing out superstar entertainment for its first NFL broadcast.
This is the second straight year the Chiefs have played on Christmas Day. Given a certain superstar singer who attended their game last year, the NFL on Christmas Day is suddenly looking very glamorous.
In a taped performance, Carey will sing her iconic and record-breaking “All I Want for Christmas” before both games.
Then Houston native Beyonce will perform at halftime of the Texans-Ravens game, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m. CST. Pentatonix will sing the national anthem.
Voices of Service, four veterans who raise awareness of military families and their challenges, will sing the anthem before the Chiefs’ game at Acrisure Stadium.
When Netflix announced Carey’s performance earlier this month, the streaming service declared “it’s not Christmas without Mariah Carey.” The songstress recently wrapped up her largest Christmas concert tour.
She released “All I Want for Christmas” 30 years ago on her “Merry Christmas” album. In announcing her Christmas Day performance, the NFL and Netflix called it an “inescapable Christmas tune.”
Inescapable and popular.
This week the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the 17th total week, giving the Grammy winner her longest Hot 100 reign.
The song also leads Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart for a record-breaking 21st total week.
Netflix is mixing entertainment with football for its NFL debut.
Netflix stars Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, from the upcoming movie “Back in Action,” and “Cobra Kai” stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, have all hyped game day.
Comedians Bert Kreischer and Nate Bargatze will serve as game-day correspondents.
