A Kansas City man was charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting in the North Town Fork Creek neighborhood of Kansas City in 2022.

Shaun D. Johnson, 42, faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action for his role in the death of George Richards, 35.

The shooting took place on Aug. 1, 2022, in the 5000 block of Bellefontaine Avenue. Kansas City police were patrolling the southeast Kansas City neighborhood around 6 p.m. when they drove past Richards lying face down in the street.

Richards had multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene. Detectives also noted that Richards had tire tread marks across his left arm and back, according to court documents.

VIdeo surveillance captured in the area shows Johnson and Richards driving together to Bellefontaine Avenue about half an hour before the shooting, according to court documents. The two can then be seen walking around for half an hour, passing in and out of view of the camera, after which Richards can be seen opening the car’s hood, using a portable car battery jump box to start the car.

As RIchards closes the hood of the car, surveillance video allegedly shows Johnson shooting him five times, then driving away, running over the left side of Richards’ body.

DNA evidence from the car battery jump box, along with cigarette butts discovered near Richards’ body, contributed to Johnson’s arrest, according to court records.

Johnson is not eligible for bond. His next court date has not yet been set.
