As Kansas Citians ring in the New Year, many are faced with the prickly task of getting rid of their Christmas trees.

Luckily, cities around the metro have dropoff sites where holiday trees can be discarded. Be sure all ornaments and decorations are removed before dropping off your tree.

These dropoff sites are for real trees only — if you need to throw out an artificial tree, use your local bulky trash pickup program.

Here’s where to get rid of yours as the Christmas season comes to a close.

Kansas City Christmas tree dropoff sites

This holiday season, Kansas City residents can drop off their real Christmas trees for free disposal on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Jan. 11. Here are the three Saturday dropoff locations:

  • Northland: 11660 N. Main St.

  • Central Kansas City: 1815 N. Chouteau Trafficway

  • South Kansas City: 10301 Raytown Road

The Northland and Central Kansas City dropoff sites are also open Monday through Friday at a cost of $5 per tree.

If you plan to keep your tree up for a little longer, you can drop it off for free on Jan. 18 or 25 at the following neighborhood locations from 8 a.m. until noon:

  • Ruskin Neighborhood: Ruskin High School at 7000 E. 111th St.

  • Blue Hills Neighborhood: the former Pershing Elementary School at 5915 Park Road

  • Oak Park Neighborhood: the former Emmanuel’s Community Center at 3510 Prospect Ave.

  • Marlborough Neighborhood: Center School District Building at 8434 Paseo Blvd. on Jan. 18 only

Overland Park Christmas tree dropoff sites

Overland Park offers free holiday tree recycling from Dec. 26 through Jan. 12. Dropoff is free at these four city sites, where trees will then be collected and processed into mulch for use at city parks.

Simply leave your trees in the parking lot at these sites where you see other discarded trees.
